Imported Fire Ant

Widely disliked for their venomous, painful stings, fire ants have spread across much of the southern United States. The ants build dome-shaped nest mounds in the soil of open areas, pastures and agronomic fields, but are found occasionally in wooded areas. Their stings are extremely painful and may cause severe or life-threatening reactions in some people. Hardened mounds interfere with mechanical cultivation of fields and the ants' painful stings disrupt livestock grazing and harvesting of crops by farm workers. Wildlife populations are affected as many insect species that serve as food are wiped out or driven off by the aggressive fire ants.
